The Ardèche, rich in heritage and curiosities, is one of France’s top ecotourism destinations. It also boasts a number of villages with character that are well worth a visit. Among these is Chassagnes, renowned for its rich past that has left a legacy of great value.

Where is Chassagnes?

The picturesque village of Chassagnes lies at the heart of a valley surrounded by mountains and hills in southern Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (central southeastern France). It faces the limestone cliffs overlooked by the Saint-Eugène hermitage and is bordered by the cultivated plains of Chassezac. Chassagnes is a small medieval village in the commune of Vans, close to the following villages: Assions, Chambonas, Berrias and Casteljau. It’s a sparsely populated town where life is calm and peaceful. It is the gateway to the Ardèche plain and its riches. It boasts well-preserved old buildings that time has had almost no effect on. What to see and do in Chassagnes

The village of Chassagnes is surrounded by numerous hiking trails, including the Bois de Païolive and Les Gras not far from your Chassagne campsite. It’s a cultural stopover that invites you to immerse yourself in the history and very sources of the Ardèche’s occupation. Take pleasure in wandering through the narrow streets dotted with traditional earth-colored houses. You’ll be tempted to extend your stay by the hospitality and gourmet cuisine that reflect the sweetness of local produce. Fishing is another popular activity in Chassagnes. However, don’t leave this pretty village without visiting its emblematic site, the Saint Eugène hermitage, a reproduction of the Byzantine-style fresco in the village chapel.
