The Ardèche is an important travel destination of the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Besides its exceptional natural wonders there are also the villages of character, classified amongst the most beautiful French villages, that are worthwhile a visit. One of these villages is Balazuc.
Balazuc is a fortified medieval village, perched on a cliff overlooking the Ardèche river. It is about 7 km east of Vogüé and 18 km from Aubenas. The village is neighboured by 7 municipalities: Vinezac, Uzer, chauzon, Lanas, Pradons, Saint-Maurice-d’Ardèche and Lagorce.
Balazuc is labeled “one of the most beautiful villages of France” and also “village with character”. The houses, built in bluish stone with three-lobed windows and broken bow doorways, and the narrow streets with vaulted passages reflect the southern ambience.
Balazuc is strongly influenced by the Seigniorial Period as shown by its rich heritage buildings. Medieval history and Gallo-Roman architecture are well represented.
Discover the feudal castle of Balazuc, now transformed into guest rooms. The natural and historic site of Rochecolombe displays nature in perfect harmony with the ancient constructions that defy time. Here you will also find the most beautiful waterfall of the Ardèche department.
And don’t forget to go on a quest for the 11th and 12th century remains of the church Sainte Marie-Madeleine, the tower of Queen Reine Jeanne, the numerous keeps and the narrow street of the old village. In order to complete your discovery you can visit the interesting Muséum de l’Ardèche, with its rich collections of authentic fossils, and the “Maison des artisans”.
