The Grotte Chauvet 2
The paintings of the Grotte Chauvet 2 called “Grotte Chauvet”
Located in south Ardeche, near the arch bridge ‘Pont d’Arc’, the decorated Grotte Chauvet 2 (called Grotte Chauvet) was discovered on December 18th, 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet, Eliette Brunel and Christian Hillaire during their private caving activities.
Thirty years after the discovery of the cave, the Grotte Chauvet 2 was opened to the public on April 25th, 2015. Visitors can discover the extraordinary paintings, engravings of more than 36 000 years old.
UNESCO, by entering the cave as a World Heritage Site in June 2014, recognized its unique and universal dimension.
