The Pont d’Arc cavern
The paintings of the Pont d’Arc cavern called “Grotte Chauvet”
Located in south Ardeche, near the arch bridge ‘Pont d’Arc’, the decorated Pont-d’Arc cavern (called Grotte Chauvet) was discovered on December 18th, 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet, Eliette Brunel and Christian Hillaire during their private caving activities.
Thirty years after the discovery of the cave, the Pont d’Arc cavern was opened to the public on April 25th, 2015. Visitors can discover the extraordinary paintings, engravings of more than 36 000 years old.
UNESCO, by entering the cave as a World Heritage Site in June 2014, recognized its unique and universal dimension.
